Julia Pamies has had the greatest journey out of the three subjects of this site. She is the only one of the three that was not born in the United states. Originally born just outside of Barcelona in northern Spain, Julia has an interesting perspective not only on the city of Pittsburgh, but the United States as a whole. In our interview, she discusses the perception that many Europeans have of the average American. She talks about how Americans are often thought of as ignorant, unhealthy, and consumer focused. It wasn’t until she actually came to the United States that she realized this stereotype does not apply to most Americans.
Julia left her country for academic purposes, citing the lack of education in the cinematic arts for her departure. Before ending up in Pittsburgh, she spent a year in New York studying at the state’s Education First institutional chapter. This school specializes in students studying abroad, and Julia says that it didn’t really help her acclimate to American culture. The reason for this was because of the number of Spanish speaking students at the school. Pittsburgh, she says, was her first real exposure to an authentic American society. In the interview, she describes a lot of differences between European cities, New York, and Pittsburgh.
After her time at Point Park is done, Julia does not have plans to stay in Pittsburgh, citing a desire to go somewhere with more opportunity in the film industry, as well as a place with a more diverse population. She says that Pittsburgh has given her a lot of experience in culture as well as the skills she needs to keep advancing in the cinematic society.
Here are some of her favorite places around town. Specifically, she enjoys Station Square and Point State Park.
