Kevin Galloway is the interviewee who’s home is closest to Pittsburgh. In fact, it is in the same state. Kevin is from Philadelphia, specifically the suburbs in the northern section of town. Like Julia, Kevin was brought to Pittsburgh exclusively to pursue an education in cinema arts at Point Park. The school fit Kevin’s requirements of an art-focused school that was not halfway across the country. Once here, Kevin saw that Pittsburgh was a city full of opportunity and that Point Park could open him up to even more.
The interesting spin that comes with Kevin’s story is that the interview touches a bit on the differences between Eastern and Western Pennsylvania culture. Here in Pittsburgh, many members of the population have a strong opinion on people from the state’s largest city. This stems a lot from sports, mainly hockey. Kevin talks about this in the interview, and explains the he really wasn’t part of the crowd that held hostilities towards Pittsburghers. Kevin actually knew nothing about Pittsburgh other than it was home to a couple major sports teams. He was drawn to Point Park after seeing a poster in his guidance counselor’s office in high school.
Having only known the cities of Philadelphia and New York, Kevin was very surprised by the size and structure of the city. Like the other interviewees, he was amazed that the city was so small and connected. He appreciates that the city has downtime at night, but still feels like a major city during the day.
Kevin, like the others featured here, plans to leave after graduating. His reasons are similar to Julia’s, citing that there are many more opportunities for careers in cinema in places like New York and Los Angeles. He did say that Pittsburgh is quickly becoming a hub for film, and would not be surprised if he comes back to the city in the future.
Kevin has a lot of places downtown that he really enjoys. His favorites include Smithfield Street (and Pizza Fiesta), Market Square, and the Inclines.
